Cycling South Shields to Chollerford

South Shields to Chollerford (Including Newcastle Upon Tyne and Hexham)

Aydon Castle & Corbridge

This is a ride through history and Tyne Valley landscape as you climb through peaceful farmland high above the River Tyne to Aydon Castle, before dropping down to historic Corbridge village and Corbridge Roman Site. All on roads, mainly quiet, but there’s a short section on the A68. Some steep hills, but worth it for the views.

City to Segedunum

This route follows Hadrian’s Cycleway along the Quayside by the River Tyne to take you to Segedunum Roman Fort. All on traffic-free path (or greenway), apart from a couple of very short bits of quiet road.

Great North Forest

This diverse and attractive ride is on the route of the popular annual Great North Forest Bike Ride. There’s wildlife, woodlands, heritage and sculpture and the opportunity to visit the Beamish Open Air Museum and the Tanfield Railway Centre. On quiet roads, railway paths and bridleways (mountain or hybrid style bikes recommended) with some steady climbs.

Segedunum to Sea

A short crossing of the River Tyne on a passenger ferry is part of this ride to get you from Segedunum to another Roman Fort at Arbeia. Then it’s on to South Shields’ sandy beaches and the striking Souter Lighthouse. The route is mostly traffic-free path (or greenway) with some short sections of quiet roads.

Tyne Riverside

Take it easy along this level route that follows the wooded river Tyne through 150 years of railway history. This is a good family ride as it’s mainly on trafficfree path (or greenway) and there are lots of interesting things to see along the way. Could be started from the Tyne Riverside Country Park Visitor Centre in Prudhoe.
